I’ve been absent lately! Apologies for that — it wasn’t planned. I got a last-minute invitation to go visit a friend out of town. It was great! She also writes, and I could talk out some of the problems I was having with my rewrite with her. Unfortunately, as soon as I got home, I immediately came down with a bug. It wasn’t that serious, but it was enough to keep me home for a couple of days. More serious, or at least, harder to shake off, was the down that came with it.
It took me a while to realize that I was feeling sad, and why, but I met up with friends for dinner last night, and am doing the same again tonight! As long as I’ve lived overseas, culture shock and homesickness are still things that I struggle with, but I am lucky enough to have other foreign teachers in my town who have been there and know what it is like. Not only am I feeling better, but I wrote yesterday — something I have not done in almost a week — and I’m going to write today.
Thorns and Fangs: The break through I mentioned? I have a tendency to overcomplicate things. I’ve stripped back the romance arc to its basics and am choosing to emphasize a couple of core conflicts. So far, I think it reads stronger. This was a really tough realization to come to and act on, as it has meant the loss of a lot of things that I liked, but writing last night I realized something amazing about my MC, and I know this is the right choice no matter how difficult to implement. I’m working my way back through the draft making these changes. I think this, in addition to being sick, has put me 1-2 weeks behind schedule, which is frustrating but I’m going to focus on getting as much doen as I can before school starts next week.
